San Francisco-based artist and writer Rebecca Chacon holds a BFA from San Diego State University and an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. Chacon is currently a master’s candidate in Visual & Critical Studies at California College of the Arts. In her thesis, “The Imperfect Normal Body: Looking at the Self-Portraiture of Artists with Disabilities,” Chacon examines personal objects and self-portraits of artists’ disabled bodies. Her research considers how Frida Kahlo and Riva Lehrer navigated their own self-presentation through visibility and concealment. Through her investigation, Chacon discovers the ongoing dialectic between presentation and identity construction.
